Hudson's Bay Company established Fort Boise in 1834 near what is now the town of Parma. Hudson's Bay Company is the oldest commercial corporation in North America and is one of the oldest in the world. Hudson's Bay Company abandon Fort Boise in 1855.
Canyon County was established in 1891 and located its county seat in Caldwell. Though current sources attribute the name to the canyon of the Boise River near Caldwell, both John Rees and Vardis Fisher believed it to be named for the Snake River which forms a natural boundry for the county. Canyon County was traveled by immigrants on the Oregon Trail. Canyon County has a population of 173,302, according to a 2006 estimate, and is 603 square miles.
